Above and Beyond
Philip and Katheryn Ireland envisioned a more welcoming entry
for their Indianapolis home, with its plain saltboxlike facade and
undeveloped front yard. By adding a pergola and updating the
landscaping, thev created an outside space so inviting it practically
greets guests at the curb and ushers them in the front door.
Like a red carpet, brick pavers create an eye-catching walkway that
starts at the street then flows into a patio. A new mahogany entry door
with sidelights and raised panels replaces the original door and stands
out against siding painted dark gray. Crown molding and deep sills beef
up main-level windows to contrast with those upstairs.
The centerpiece of the transformation is the pergola, which
architect CIcte Kunce and builder John Lcrchcn fit seamlessly into a
space created by the bumped-forward garage. The columned addition
breaks up the home's flat front and provides some shade for a new
sitting area outfitted with rocking chairs. The spot is also a draw in
the evenings thanks to lights recessed in the brick at the base of the
columns and copper downlights incorporated into the pergola's rafters.
